The flimsy wooden door buckled on its hinges. Two more violent blows landed in quick succession, and it was these that brought Alana bursting through the surface of deep sleep and into the waking world. She tossed a curious glance at the glowing green numbers on her alarm clock; they read 3:02 a.m.  
 
With an annoyed grumble, she threw off the covers and got out of bed. A stray beam of moonlight slipped through the curtains in her bedroom, reflecting momentarily on her glasses. Why does work have to suck so hard? Gods. I'm so sick of getting screwed over at this place. If it wasn't for the money, I'd find another job... but there's really nowhere else in Pensacola I can make this kind of cash, being a woman and all.

Fuckin' hell.
